"You Paid HOW Much?" The $179 Bag That Embarrassed Every Big Luggage Brand I Tested

Luggage brands charge up to $699 for a garment travel bag. I priced 5 of them, feature by feature. The most expensive one did 3 of the 6 jobs. The cheapest one did all 6.

Garment travel bag prices: Briggs and Riley $699, Away $278, Halfday $258, Luux $195, Luhxe $179

"Brands are charging up to $699 for a travel bag like this."

That was the line in the video. A woman in a room full of travel bags. Then she kept going.

"It even has a shoe compartment. It even has wheels. And they come off."

I rolled my eyes. Then I checked.

Because two weeks earlier, my sister Jen almost paid $278 for one.

The text that started it

Jen sent me a link on a Sunday night.

Jen
Is this worth it? Wedding in Lisbon. I don't want to check a bag.
Away Garment Duffle, $278
Does it roll?
No.
Then you'll carry 4 lbs of bag and a week of clothes on your shoulder. Through Lisbon airport.
So what do I buy?
Give me a day.

It took me three.

How I did it

I picked the five garment travel bags people actually search for. Same job for all five:

  • carry a dress flat
  • keep shoes away from clean clothes
  • go in the cabin, not the hold

I opened each brand's own product page. I wrote down every feature and every number. Price, weight, size, wheels, shoe space.

Then I did something no product page does.

I divided the price by the features.

What I found

The price had almost nothing to do with the features.

The most expensive bag cost $699 and did three of the six jobs. The cheapest bag with wheels cost $179 and did all six.

What you pay for in a $699 bag is mostly the name, a heavy frame and a long warranty. Not one more thing for your dress or your shoes.

What overpaying costs

$699The most expensive bag in this test. It weighs 9.92 lbs empty. [2]
$520The gap between that bag and the cheapest wheeled bag here, which has more features.
$7.4BWhat US airlines collected in bag fees in 2025. [1] Every bag that won't go in the cabin adds to it.

The 6 jobs a garment travel bag has to do

  1. Your dress comes out flat. A real hanger or garment fold. Not a big pouch.
  2. Your shoes stay away from your clothes. Their own compartment, not "organizational pockets".
  3. It rolls. Wheels for the long walk to the gate.
  4. The wheels come off, so it still works as a shoulder bag at the hotel.
  5. Under 3 lbs empty, so your weight allowance goes to clothes, not bag.
  6. It goes in the cabin. Carry on size, so no bag fee and no wait at the carousel.

Price per feature: all 5 bags

This is the bag from the video. And yes, I checked every line.

What we liked
  • It even has a built in hanger. Your dress goes in around it. The lining is wrinkle resistant, so it comes out ready to wear.
  • It even has a dedicated shoe compartment. Heels for dinner, sneakers for the day. They never touch your clothes.
  • It even has pockets just for makeup.
  • It even has wheels. Snap them on, pull out the telescopic handle and roll. At the hotel, pop them off and tuck them inside. No tools.
  • It even has a water resistant coating, for spills and light rain.
  • It weighs 2.2 lbs empty. The Briggs & Riley weighs 9.92.
  • Luhxe says it holds 38+ items of clothing plus 5 pairs of shoes. That's 10 days of everyday clothes and 2 to 3 dresses.
  • At 20 x 9 x 12.5 inches it's the smallest bag in this test. Luhxe says it's carry on approved on 100+ airlines, including Spirit, United, Delta, American, Southwest, British Airways, Lufthansa and Emirates.
  • Three colors: Rose, Charcoal and Snow. Gold zippers on all three.
What to keep in mind
  • It's a soft bag, so it won't protect a fragile souvenir like a hard case.
  • Clipping the wheels on takes a few seconds.
  • No padded laptop sleeve listed. If you work on the road, the Away has one.

The telescopic handle pulls out of the bag. The wheels snap on underneath.

Jen read all that and sent one line back.

So it's the cheapest one AND it rolls?
Yes.
Why is it the cheapest?

Fair question. Here's my best answer. Luhxe sells one bag, direct, mostly online. No stores to pay for, no luggage line to fund. The others are big catalogs with big rent.

$195 (was $349) · 4 of 6 features
What we liked
  • The closest thing to the Luhxe in this test. Garment mode and a trolley hidden in the base.
  • 2.2 lbs, with water resistant PU leather.
What to keep in mind
  • It costs $16 more and does less. Shoes go in a free pouch, not their own compartment.
  • Luux doesn't say the wheels come off.
  • The return window is 14 days. That's one trip, maybe.

And that "was $349" is doing a lot of work.

$258 · 4 of 6 features
What we liked
  • The best bag here for a suit. The built in garment bag takes up to a 50R suit.
  • Two shoe compartments.
  • 60 days to return it unused, plus a limited lifetime warranty.
What to keep in mind
  • It weighs 7 lbs empty. That's more than three Luhxe bags.
  • Two wheels, so you tilt and drag.
  • At 22.5 inches long it's over the 22 inch limit most US airlines print.

$79 more than the Luhxe, for a bag that does less and weighs three times as much.

What we liked
  • The one Jen almost bought. A garment sleeve with three loops and a hook to hang it in the hotel.
  • Two shoe pockets and a padded laptop sleeve.
What to keep in mind
  • No wheels. The trolley sleeve only helps if you already own a suitcase to slide it onto.
  • 4 lbs empty, all of it on your shoulder.

$99 more than the Luhxe. You get a laptop sleeve and the Away name. You lose the wheels.

$699 · 3 of 6 features
What we liked
  • A serious bag. Briggs & Riley will repair it for life, free, even if an airline breaks it.
  • A suiter section, a TSA lock and a charging pocket.
What to keep in mind
  • 9.92 lbs before you pack a sock.
  • Two wheels that don't come off, and no shoe compartment listed.

$699. That's $520 more than the Luhxe. Nearly four of them. If a friend showed me this bag, my first question would be: "You paid HOW much?"

The verdict

Price is not quality. And it's definitely not features.

What you pay per feature
Luhxe$29.83
Luux$48.75
Halfday$64.50
Away$92.67
Briggs & Riley$233

The Luhxe was the cheapest bag with wheels in this test. It was also the only one that did all six jobs. $29.83 per feature, against $233 for the most expensive bag.

Jen ordered the Rose one. Roller Edition.

She texted me from Lisbon five days later.

Jen
Green dress came out of the bag on the hanger. Didn't iron a thing.
Bag was in the overhead. I was out of the airport in 20 minutes.
Woman next to me at the gate had the Away one. Asked about mine.
Told her $179. She said "You paid HOW much?? Mine was $278 and it doesn't even roll."

Which Luhxe model should you get?

Roller Edition, $179. Snap on wheels and a telescopic handle. Pick this one if you walk through airports. Most people do.
Classic, $129. Same bag, no wheels. Shoulder and hand carry only. Still less than the Béis Garment Duffle ($168, no wheels, no dedicated shoe compartment listed). [7]
Two bags. Two Roller bags are $279 ($140 each). Two Classic bags are $179. Good if you travel with a partner.

How to use it

  1. Hang your dresses on the built in hanger and fold the bag around them.
  2. Shoes go in the shoe compartment, makeup in the makeup pockets, everything else in the main space.
  3. Snap on the wheels at the airport. Pop them off at the hotel and hang the bag.

Is it a $699 bag?

No. It's PU leather, not hand stitched calfskin. It won't stop a suitcase falling on it.

But it carries 10 days of clothes, keeps your dress flat, keeps your shoes apart, rolls through the terminal and goes in the overhead bin. For $179.

And Luhxe gives every bag a 100 Day Guarantee: "We stand behind every Luhxe bag. If it's not right, we'll make it right." Pack it for a real trip before you decide.

Real customers. Real results.

The wheels on this bag have changed travel forever 😳

I used to dread dragging my luggage through airports, but with Luhxe, I just snap on the wheels, and it glides effortlessly. It makes layovers and long walks to the gate so much easier!
