Top 5 Carry Ons for Women Who Fly Every Month, Ranked on the 5 Things That Wear You Down
One brand says its bag was tested on over 500 flights. So we scored five popular carry ons on what actually goes wrong when you fly a lot.
By Claire Bennett
Travel Editor · flies 2 to 4 times a month
The five carry ons in this test, lined up before the first flight.
I saw the ad on YouTube like a lot of you probably did. A rose pink bag, and one line: "This bag was tested on over 500 flights."
My first thought was, okay, sure.
My second thought was, that's about how many flights I take in ten years.
I fly two to four times a month. Work trips, my sister's kids, a wedding almost every summer. I have killed more carry ons than I want to admit. So I don't care how a bag looks in a photo. I care about what goes wrong with it on flight 30.
That's what this ranking is about.
Why most carry ons die young
My last spinner. One curb too many.
Here's the thing nobody tells you. If you fly once a year, almost any suitcase is fine. If you fly every month, your bag goes through more in one year than most bags see in ten.
Think of it like shoes. Running shoes for someone who jogs once a month last forever. For someone who runs every day, they're done in a few months. Bags are the same.
After years of this, I can tell you it's always the same five things that break you down:
SpaceA carry on that can't hold a real trip. So you check a bag and pay for it.
The pileOne big hole where shoes sit on clean shirts and your lipstick sinks to the bottom.
WrinklesA dress folded into a square comes out with lines in it. Like folding a piece of paper.
WeightA heavy empty bag eats your airline weight limit and your shoulder.
WearWheels snap, zippers catch, corners split. Usually on the way home.
What one checked bag really costs
$65+per trip to check a bag¹
$325+a year if you fly 5 times¹
7 to 8 lbswhat a lot of rollers weigh empty²
So I scored every bag from 1 to 10 on each of those five things. Same trips, same packing list: a week of outfits, two dresses, a blazer and three pairs of shoes. The overall score is the average of the five.

Luhxe Travel Bag 2.0 (Roller Edition)

This is the bag from the ad. Luhxe says it was tested on over 500 flights, and that it's made to stay like new even after 300+ trips.³ I can't count to 500 for you. What I can tell you is how it handled each of the five problems.
Problem 1, space: a full week went in
Luhxe says it holds 38+ items of clothing plus 5 pairs of shoes.⁴ My week of outfits, two dresses, the blazer and three pairs of shoes went in with room left over. At 20 x 9 x 12.5 inches it's carry on size on over 100 airlines,⁴ so I never paid a bag fee.
Problem 2, the pile: everything has a room
Shoes go in their own compartment. Makeup gets its own pockets. It's like a closet with drawers that folds up into a bag. I stopped digging.
Problem 3, wrinkles: the built in hanger
This is the big one for me. There's a built in hanger and a wrinkle resistant lining.⁴ Your dress stays long and flat instead of being folded into a square. At the hotel I lifted the hanger straight onto the closet rod. No steaming.
Problem 4, weight: 2.2 pounds and wheels that come off
Empty, it weighs 2.2 pounds.⁴ That's about one big bottle of water. Most of the rollers in this test weigh three times that. When my arm was done, the two wheels snapped on in about five seconds and the handle pulled out of its hidden sleeve. On the plane, the wheels come off and go inside the bag.
Problem 5, wear: what I'd watch
The vegan leather has a water resistant coating, and the zippers are non slip.⁴ Coffee wiped right off. To be fair: the gold hardware picked up a couple of faint scuffs, and a soft bag won't protect a fragile souvenir like a hard shell would.
What I liked
Fits a real trip in carry on size, so the $65+ bag fee stays in your pocket
Built in hanger keeps dresses and blazers ready to wear
2.2 pounds empty, the lightest bag here (tied with Luux)
The only bag in the test with wheels you can take off
100 Day Guarantee, long enough to take it on several real trips
What to keep in mind
Soft bag, so it won't guard fragile things like a hard case
The wheels take a few seconds to clip on and off each time

The Luux is the closest thing to the Luhxe. Same 2.2 pound weight, a garment mode that opens flat, and a trolley hidden in the base. A blazer made it through two red eyes without a crease.
What I liked
Very light for a bag with wheels built in
Garment mode keeps suits and dresses flat
Toiletry and shoe pouch in the box
What to keep in mind
The wheels and plate never come off, so it stays stiff
Only 14 day returns
$195 under a "44% off" banner that never seems to end
Verdict: a good bag. It loses to the Luhxe on organization, the fixed wheels and the much shorter return window.

The zip away garment bag is clever. Hang a suit, zip it into the lid, pull it out pressed. Two shoe compartments, tough ballistic nylon and a limited lifetime warranty.
What I liked
Best suit carrier in the test
45 liters with real shoe storage
Tough 1680D nylon shell
What to keep in mind
7 pounds empty, more than three times the Luhxe
Two wheels, so you tilt and drag it
$258, and 22.5 inches long can trip strict sizers
Verdict: if you fly with suits, it's great. If you count pounds, it hurts on problem 4.

A great hard shell spinner with 49 liters, smooth 360 degree wheels and LifetimeCare repairs. On problem 5 it's one of the best here.
What I liked
Shell shrugs off rough handling
Thousands of reviews, a safe pick
Repairs for as long as you own it
What to keep in mind
7.9 pounds empty
No garment system, so dresses come out needing an iron
$295
Verdict: great suitcase, wrong job. It wins on wear and loses on wrinkles and weight.

Beautiful hardware, aluminum corners, a TSA lock and a clever trick that locks two Béis rollers together. Built like a tank.
What I liked
Strongest build in the test
Two bags couple into one for families
Hidden AirTag pocket
What to keep in mind
8.39 pounds, the heaviest here
Smallest at 35 liters (41 expanded)
$298, the most expensive
Verdict: buy it for the look. For a monthly flyer, it loses on space, weight and wrinkles.
The verdict: only one bag fixed all five
Every bag here is good at something. The Away and the Béis are the toughest. The Halfday carries a suit best. The Luux is almost as light.
But only the Luhxe Travel Bag 2.0 solved all five problems at once. A full week in carry on size. A room for everything. A hanger for the dress. 2.2 pounds, with wheels when you want them and none when you don't. And a 100 Day Guarantee if it doesn't work for you.
Wheels on for the long walk to the gate.
Is it magic? No. It's a soft bag, so pack anything fragile in the middle. And I can't check Luhxe's 500 flights myself. But after a season of my own trips, it's the one I pack first. It paid for itself the first time I skipped a checked bag fee.

The wheels on this bag have changed travel forever
I used to dread dragging my luggage through airports, but with Luhxe, I just snap on the wheels, and it glides effortlessly. It makes layovers and long walks to the gate so much easier!

Questions readers ask
Will it really fit as a carry on?
Luhxe lists it at 20 x 9 x 12.5 inches and says it's carry on approved on over 100 airlines, including Spirit, United, Frontier, American, Delta and Southwest. Always check your airline's size rules before you fly.
What's the difference between Classic and Roller Edition?
The Roller Edition comes with the snap on wheels and telescopic handle. The Classic is the same bag without wheels, with a flat bottom. Both are on the same product page.
How long do the wheels take to put on?
Luhxe says about 5 seconds. They clip on, and when you're done they come off and tuck inside the bag.
What if it doesn't work for me?
Luhxe has a 100 Day Guarantee: "if it's not right, we'll make it right." That's long enough to take it on a few real trips first.
Which color should I pick?
Rose, Charcoal or Snow, all with gold zippers. The link on this page opens the Rose Roller Edition; you can switch colors on the Luhxe page.
