I Tried 5 Ways to Never Pay to Check a Suitcase Again. Only One Got Me Through the Gate.
A carry on that holds 2 weeks of clothes, so you never pay to check your suitcase again? I didn't believe it either. So here's everything I tried first.
Budget travel writer
This year my sister Jess and I took nine budget flights. Every single time, the same thing happened at the gate. Our clothes cost more to fly than we did.
So we tried everything. A $39 "personal item" backpack. A $275 hard shell spinner. $35 compression cubes. Wearing half my closet onto the plane.
None of it worked. When I first saw a bag promising two weeks of clothes and no more checked bag fees, I scrolled right past it. I'd heard that promise before.
Then a stranger opened that exact bag in front of me in a boarding line.
Tap through the trip with me. It takes two minutes, and it might save you $497 like it would have saved me.
The "Personal Item" Backpack
Fort Lauderdale. Gate C4. Ten past six in the morning.
The backpack fit under the seat in the photos. The photos didn't have my hair dryer, two pairs of sandals and five days of clothes in them.
"Ma'am, it has to fit in the sizer."
I pushed. Then I knelt on the floor and pushed harder. About forty people watched me do it.
It didn't fit. She turned the card reader toward me.
The Hard Shell Spinner From Every Packing Video
After Fort Lauderdale, Jess said, "Just get a proper carry on." So I bought the shiny one everyone posts. $275.
It rolled beautifully to the gate in Denver. Then we boarded in group 6.
"Bins are full. We'll need to check that one."
The agent tagged the handle before I could answer. Forty minutes later we were still standing at an empty carousel in Austin. Everyone else was already in a taxi.
"So you paid $275 to check a bag," Jess said. "Congrats."
We lost our whole first evening. And back home, the thing took up half my hallway closet.
The Compression Cubes
Then I watched a video called "Pack 10 days in a backpack." Compression cubes. Zip, squeeze, zip again.
They worked. Everything fit. Until I unpacked.
In Lisbon I opened the cube with my green dress for my friend Ana's wedding. It came out looking like a paper napkin. Deep folds across the whole skirt.
The hotel charged $18 to press it. I missed the photos before the ceremony waiting for it.
Squeezing clothes flat is the same thing as creasing them. Nobody puts that in the video.
Wearing Half My Closet Onto the Plane
The flight home from Lisbon. I refused to pay again. So I wore it.
An orange sweater. A fleece. A scarf, a beanie and my puffer jacket, with my sandals stuffed in the pocket. It was 84 degrees outside.
Jess filmed the whole thing. "This is going in the family chat," she said, crying with laughter.
I was sweating before security. And my shoes still didn't fit anywhere, so we paid for a checked bag anyway.
The Bag a Stranger Opened in the Boarding Line
Still sweating in my four layers, I noticed the woman in front of us in the line.
Sixty something. Linen pants. One soft pink bag on her shoulder. The gate agent glanced at it and scanned her boarding pass.
I couldn't help it. "How do you travel with just that?"
"Honey, I haven't paid a bag fee in a year."
Her name was Marlene. She was flying home after ten days in Portugal.
She unzipped it right there in the line. A built in hanger with a blazer on it. A separate compartment at the bottom for shoes. Little pockets for makeup. Ten days of clothes, flat and neat.
"It's called Luhxe," she said. "My daughter made me get one."
Jess was already typing it into her phone. "Wait," she said, and turned the screen to me. "Isn't this the bag from that ad you kept scrolling past?"
It was. The carry on that holds two weeks of clothes, so you never pay to check your suitcase again. I'd ignored it for a month.
Eight Days in Mexico City, One Bag
I ordered one the night we landed. Two weeks later I packed it for Mexico City. This is what it did that none of the others could:
- Real carry on size. 20 x 9 x 12.5 inches, and Luhxe says it's approved on 100+ airlines. It went in the overhead bin like a soft duffel, not a brick.
- It holds a lot. Luhxe says 38+ items of clothing plus 5 pairs of shoes. I never got close. I didn't need to.
- Shoes get their own compartment. No more sandals in jacket pockets.
- Built in hanger and wrinkle resistant lining. My dress came out ready to wear. No $18 pressing.
- 2.2 pounds empty. My spinner weighed more than some of the clothes inside it.
- Shoulder strap or wheels. The Roller Edition has wheels you can take off.
Five Ways, One Year, One Winner
Same year. Same airports. Same two sisters. Here's the honest scorecard.
| Option | Cost |
|---|---|
| $39 backpack Too small for five days, $65 fee anyway | $104 |
| $275 spinner Gate checked, 40 minutes at the carousel | $275 |
| $35 compression cubes Everything fit, everything creased | $53 |
| Wearing it all Sweating at security, checked bag anyway | $65 |
| Luhxe Travel Bag 2.0 Overhead bin, a week and then some, no creases | $129 |
The four that failed cost us $497 combined. The one that worked is $129 in the Fall Sale. It's the only one we both still use.
Two Sisters, Two Bags, Zero Fees
It's been four months since Lisbon. The backpack went to my nephew. The spinner is still for sale online. Nobody wants it.
Last month Jess and I flew to Nashville for her birthday. Two Luhxe bags. She took Rose, I took Charcoal. We used the Buy 2 deal: $179 for both, so $90 each.
We walked straight past the bag drop line. Group 6 again. Full bins again. We slid both bags in and sat down.
"Okay. I take back everything I said about you and bags."
Luhxe's own page puts checked bag fees at $65 or more per trip. For two of us, that's more than the bag, every single trip.
What It Won't Do
Before you buy anything because of a stranger in a boarding line, here's what I'd want to know.
It's a carry on, not a magic trick. At 20 x 9 x 12.5 inches it's made for the overhead bin, and Luhxe lists it as approved on 100+ airlines. Some basic economy fares charge for any carry on, so check your fare before you book.
It has limits. For me, eight days fit. A two week winter trip with boots would not.
You can send it back. Luhxe has a 100 Day Guarantee. In their words: "We stand behind every Luhxe bag. If it's not right, we'll make it right."
What other travelers say
"My husband loves the snow colored one I got for his birthday so much!! He didn't even bring a suitcase when we went to Europe for 2 weeks and just stuffed everything inside the bag."
"I've tried every trick to keep my clothes from wrinkling on trips, but the built in hanger and anti wrinkle lining in the Luhxe bag really work."
"It fits all my essentials, including shoes for every occasion and outfits for a full week! No more leaving things behind or feeling unprepared."

Jess thought it was too good to be true too. Then she packed hers for Nashville.
